Florianópolis (affectionately known as Floripa) boasts 42 beaches framed by lush hills, earning it the nickname “Magic Island”. In 48 hours, you can only scratch the surface of this island city, so smart planning is key. The island spans about 54 km end-to-end, meaning travel between sights takes time (often 30+ minutes) – even more so in the summer high season when traffic can surge. To make the most of a short stay, it’s wise to base yourself centrally. Many locals suggest staying near Lagoa da Conceição, a lively lagoon district with plenty of restaurants, and an ideal midpoint between north and south attractions. From here, you’re all set to dive into two days of city exploring, beach hopping, and tasting local favorites.

Day 1 – City Orientation & Local Flavor

Kick off your first day with a morning in Centro (downtown Florianópolis) to get a feel for the city’s culture and history. Stroll through the Mercado Público (public market) – a 19th-century market hall buzzing with local vendors and cafés – and grab a late-morning snack like a pastel (fried pastry) or cup of Brazilian coffee. Wander the surrounding historic streets to see colonial-era buildings and the famous fig tree at Praça XV.

Around midday, enjoy lunch at a market eatery or nearby restaurant; Floripa’s seafood is a must-try, so consider ordering the catch of the day or shrimp pastel. In the afternoon, take in a panoramic view of the island: a quick ride up to Morro da Cruz viewpoint offers a stunning 360° look at the city, bay, and bridges below.

Later, cross or view the iconic Hercílio Luz Bridge – a graceful suspension bridge that’s the symbol of Floripa – especially picturesque as the sun starts to set.

By evening, head back to Lagoa da Conceição for a relaxing night. The Lagoa area comes alive after dark with casual bars and live-music cafés. Grab dinner at a lakeside restaurant; as a local insider tip, try a sequência de camarão (shrimp feast) or fresh oysters (Floripa is Brazil’s largest oyster producer) paired with a caipirinha. It’s the perfect way to toast your first day, with lake breezes and maybe some samba or live music in the background.

Day 2 – Beaches, Nature & Relaxation

Start day two by immersing yourself in Floripa’s natural beauty. In the morning, pack your swimwear and head to Praia Mole, one of the island’s most popular beaches. Backed by green hills and known for its consistent surf, Praia Mole is great for catching some waves or just people-watching on the sand. (If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even rent a board or take a beginner surf lesson – Floripa’s surf culture is huge.)

Just next door are the towering Joaquina dunes, where you can try sandboarding down the soft white sand for an adrenaline kick.

By late morning, make your way to the charming village of Barra da Lagoa on the east coast. This former fishing village has a laid-back vibe: colorful boats in the canal, casual eateries, and a crescent of golden beach. Grab a simple lunch here – perhaps a pf (prato feito) featuring grilled fish – and then explore Barra in the afternoon.

You can visit the Projeto TAMAR sea turtle rescue center to learn about local marine life, or cross the footbridge to discover the short trail toward the natural tidal pools (Piscinas Naturais), a scenic hike that rewards you with crystal-clear water among the rocks for a refreshing dip. For a final evening treat, consider a memorable sunset dinner away from the crowds.

Drive out to Santo Antônio de Lisboa, a picturesque bay-side village known for its Azorean charm and seafood restaurants on the water. As the sun sets over the bay, feast on Floripa’s famed oysters or a seafood Moqueca, enjoying the view of fishing boats and colonial buildings aglow in golden light. It’s the perfect wrap-up to your 48-hour whirlwind in Floripa, capturing the island’s serene natural beauty and its rich local flavor.

Seasonal Tips

Floripa is enjoyable year-round, but the experience changes with the seasons. Summer (Dec–Mar) is peak time – days are hot and sunny, the ocean is warm enough for all-day swimming, and nightlife is in full swing. This is when Floripa feels most vibrant, though you’ll contend with bigger crowds and slow traffic on popular beach routes. In winter (Jun–Aug), the island calms down. Temperatures are mild (around 14–21 °C), and while ocean swimming might be brisk (water ~18–20 °C), it’s a fantastic time for hiking the scenic trails or enjoying empty beaches and local culture without the tourist bustle. Spring and fall are great compromise seasons – generally warm, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Importantly, Florianópolis never turns into a ghost town in the off-season; with a large permanent population and university, there’s always some buzz. So whether you visit in the heat of January or the mellow days of September, this 48-hour itinerary can be tweaked to fit: in summer, start your days early to beat traffic and take a midday beach break, while in cooler months you might linger longer over cultural sights and add a whale-watching viewpoint on the southern coast (July–Oct). The Magic Island charms in every season.
